The Ministry of Education’s information systems strategy is to use IS to empower networked learners and create virtual learning communities:

  • enhance the connections between learners and the resources they need to fulfil their learning aspirations
  • equip learners with the capacity to learn, at any age or stage
  • open new learning pathways for the 21st century knowledge society
  • engage people in their own education by removing information gate-keepers and supporting diverse learning styles

The above diagram shows an education sector in which all learners are connected to the resources they need, when and where they need them. Sector agencies are connected to one another and can access any authorised information relevant to any learner or provider. Parents, iwi and community groups become active partners in the education network. In this way, information systems help develop learning communities, learning organisations and learning conversations.

The Ministry’s primary role is facilitator, providing sector leadership and tool sets.
