Employment Outcomes of Tertiary Education

Statistics NZ Thursday 15th October 2:30–3:30pm Conference Room G.07

Statistics New Zealand along with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Labour are pleased to invite you to a seminar presenting the Employment Outcomes of Tertiary Education (EOTE) feasibility study.

The EOTE feasibility study has successfully created new information and research on the labour market experiences of recent participants in tertiary education and training by linking education and training data with the Linked Employer Employee Data (LEED).

The presentations will cover:

  1. An overview of the EOTE project

  2. Potential new official statistics from EOTE

  3. What Do Students Earn After Their Tertiary Education?

This study looked at 1–3 year post-study earnings for 30,000 young students last enrolled at a tertiary provider in 2003, and examined the following questions:

  • What were the earnings for different levels of study?
  • What were the earnings for different fields of study?
  • How much difference did completing a qualification make?
  • Were there benefits to passing courses without gaining qualifications?
  • Did it matter which type of provider you studied at?

  1. Does Workplace-based Industry Training Improve Earnings?

This study looked at those who left training in 2003–05, and examined the following questions:

  • What qualifications were gained?
  • Were the earnings during and after training higher than those of comparable non-participants?
  • How did this vary by the level of qualification gained, age, and gender?
  • To what extent were non-completions explained by jobs ending?
  • To what extent were trainees retained by employers and within industries?

The feasibility study was a joint project undertaken by Statistics NZ, the Ministry of Education, the Department of Labour, Inland Revenue, and the Tertiary Education Commission.

Results from the EOTE feasibility study are available on the Statistics NZ website
