Profile and Trends 2008

Profile & Trends is a primary information resource on New Zealand’s tertiary education system. It includes information on participation, achievement, resourcing, capability and research. This year, the publication contains four short articles: recent changes to higher education policy and funding in Australia and Scotland, trends in the demand for tertiary education, trends in field of study of bachelors degree graduates and New Zealand’s industry training data.

Top 10 trends in tertiary education in 2008

• One in two working-age New Zealanders are tertiary qualified
• One in six have a bachelors degree or higher qualification
• 8.9% increase in doctoral enrolments
• 4.8% increase in industry training
• 0.5% increase in study of diplomas and higher-level qualifications
• 16% increase in university research contract income
• 2.1% low unemployment for people with a bachelors degree or higher
• the operating surplus of tertiary education institutions was 2.8% of their operating revenue
• 8.6% increase in international first-year enrolments
• 7.9% decrease in non-degree, provider-based enrolments
