This is our last newsletter for 2008. In this issue we announce the release of the tenth annual report on the tertiary education system and update you on forthcoming publications.

Tenth annual profile and trends report released

As we go to press, Profile and Trends has just come out. This is the tenth edition of this report.

Profile and Trends is a substantial work that distils trend data on every aspect of tertiary education – participation, completions, the outcomes of study, research, funding, financial performance. It looks at all subsectors and all types of post-school education.

As well as the trend data, the book includes a set of 18 articles that delve in greater depth into the system and its performance. These cover such topics as:

• Tertiary education and productivity

• The educational inheritance of New Zealanders

• Does education improve wellbeing

• People in tertiary education over time: the cumulative cohort participation rate

• The impact of student support policies

• Patterns of research performance in New Zealand and Australian universities

• Has the PBRF led to a concentration of research funding?

• The tertiary education workforce: a census income analysis

You can access Profile and Trends on the Education Counts website.

You can find the individual articles here.

You can expect the associated statistical tables to be loaded on Education Counts in the next week or so.

Other publications

In the October newsletter, we foreshadowed a number of coming publications. Most of those publications have not yet appeared. The reason is that with a new government, we have wanted to our new minister to get familiar with her portfolio before swamping her with analytical reports. So we have delayed publication of several completed reports until the new year.

These reports cover such things as:

• An extended bibliometric analysis of NZ university research

• Labour market outcomes of student support recipients

• A comparison of the earnings of bachelors graduates from universities and polytechnics

• Some studies from the Adult Literacy and Lifeskills Survey

Other analytical work getting close to completion which will appear in the first quarter of 2009 includes:

• Industry training – a completions analysis

• The relationship between skills, education, occupation and income

• Advanced trade, technical and professional qualifications - a supply analysis

• The first monitoring report on the second tertiary education strategy
