In this newsletter, we update you on forthcoming work from the Ministry of Education and highlight recent work on adult literacy, international education and regional industry statistics.

Upcoming reports from the Ministry of Education

Youth training
We have completed a statistical analysis of Youth Training, looking at participation trends and outcomes. This follows on from the analysis of Training Opporunities, released recently. We plan to have this out in December.

Transitions from school to bachelors study
We also plan to release within the next few weeks a statistical study of how school achievement relates to the probability a student will go into bachelor-level study.

Occasional papers
We are also planning a series of shorter reports — of around 10 pages — which we call “occasional papers”. These reports will focus on various aspects of the tertiary education system and its performance. You can expect the first block of these either at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2010.

Numeracy Skills and Education in New Zealand & Australia - more results from the Adult Literacy and Life Skills (ALL) Survey

This report provides an initial investigation into the relationships between education level, numeracy, participation in up-skilling and self-assessed numeracy through the adult populations of New Zealand and Australia.

The report is available on the Education Counts website.

New Zealand Alumni Survey: Experiences, Attitudes and Engagement

This publication is an independent survey to advise how international alumni can help New Zealand tertiary institutions develop and raise their profiles internationally. It identifies the overall attitudes, preferences and expectations of New Zealand alumni residing overseas and levels of support necessary for future activities.

The report is available on the Education Counts website.

Regional Industry Tool 2009

The Regional Industry Tool is an interactive labour market analysis tool, developed by the Department of Labour, which allows you to select and view key facts about selected regions or industry in terms of the number of employees. Various measures are presented in the tool to analyse features of a regional labour market and industry presence across regions. If you are visiting the Department of Labour’s site, you might also want to have a look at the Jobs and Tertiary Education tool. This tool uses data from the last three Census to enable you to see how a graduate’s field of study relates to his/her occupation.

The tool is available on the Department of Labour website.

In-house Literacy, Language and Numeracy (LLN) Initiatives in New Zealand Workplaces
This report from the Department of Labour summarises the findings of a review into the level of literacy, language and numeracy in employer-funded training in workplaces in New Zealand in 2008. The purpose of this review was to find out more about the types of LLN training employers were undertaking, without the support of government funding.

Assessment of Learning in the Workplace: A background paper
This is the first output of the ITF Research Network project on ITO Workplace Assessment Structures, funded by Ako Aotearoa. It explores selected relevant literature on learning that is assessed in the workplace, and specifically: the role of assessment in workplace learning, different international approaches to assessment in the workplace, and the experiences of workplace assessors.

Towards retention: the role of assessment, motivation and prior knowledge in learner completion
This project, funded by Ako Aotearoa, enquires into how assessment processes affect student motivation and course completion in a workplace-based learning course. The project report recommends changes for refining and improving assessment tools used during at work study courses.
