We are resuming the Tertiary Analysis Newsletter this year with an indepth look at the 2007 Profile and Trends report

Welcome to the first issue of the Tertiary Analysis Newsletter for 2009. In the October issue we mentioned some of our upcoming reports. Publication of these reports was held back due to the election and in order to allow our Minister some time to settle into the portfolio. These reports will be published over the next two to three weeks. The findings of the reports will be summarised in next month’s newsletter.

Profile and Trends report released

At the end of November, we published the 10th edition of Profile and Trends, our annual report on the tertiary education sector. You can find the full report on the Education Counts website.

As with the previous year’s report, a key feature of the latest report is the inclusion of 18 analytical articles. These are available separately as word documents on Education Counts. The first five, looking at education outcomes, are described below.

From 2004 to 2007, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) conducted an investigation of tertiary education policy and practice among its member nations. The review findings have been summarised in an OECD report, Tertiary education for the knowledge society. The first article in Profile and Trends assesses the significance of the report and summarises its main points, while focusing in more depth on the key theme of ‘strengthening ties with the labour market’.

The 2006 Adult Literacy and Life Skills survey provides a new source of information on the distribution of education and skills across and within generations. Three articles in the outcomes section draw on information from this survey. The articles look at inter generational patterns of education, the relationship between education and skill, and whether education improves well being.

The remaining article in the outcomes section reviews recent research on the relationship between education and productivity. It looks at the question why it is that the number of tertiary qualified people in the workforce has increased but New Zealand’s labour productivity has not grown as fast as its main competitors.

Student Loans Scheme Annual Report and student allowances information released

In December, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Social Development and the Inland Revenue Department released the 2008 Student Loans Scheme Annual Report. This report provides analysis on the scheme and its outcomes, as well as presenting the financial statements for the year to 30 June.

The Ministry also released a short factsheet on the trends in student allowances. This is also available on the Education Counts website.

Disability and Education in New Zealand in 2006

Disability and Education in New Zealand in 2006 presents results from the 2006 Household Disability Survey on disabled people’s use of education and training services. The aims of the report are to describe the survey results to a wide audience and give an educational profile of disabled people in New Zealand. The report does not aim to address specific research or policy questions or theories.

Disability and Education in New Zealand in 2006 is the second of six reports based on the 2006 Household Disability Survey. All of the reports are being prepared jointly between Statistics NZ and the Office of Disability Issues (ODI).

The report is available on the Statistics New Zealand website.
