MonitoringReport2004 Maori Research Staff ← Kaupapa Maori Provision | Home Page | Education for Pacific Peoples Development and Success → The TES includes a focus on developing a strong and balanced Māori staff profile within the tertiary education system. This means Māori being well represented in TEO staffing, particularly in teaching and decision-making positions. Currently, there is no central collection of information on the ethnicity of staff across the entire tertiary education system. The Baseline Monitoring Report reported that the New Zealand Census shows that 8.6 percent of tertiary teaching professionals were Māori in 2001. The recent PBRF provides further information on the ethnicity of staff engaged in teaching at degree level and above (in TEOs that submitted staff portfolios for assessment). Māori staff made up 6.1 percent of FTE staff with a declared ethnic group1 assessed for the PBRF. This figure fits with the Census figure and suggests that a greater proportion of Māori staff are teaching below degree level than of non-Māori staff. Both figures highlight the continued need to recruit, retain and promote Māori staff within the tertiary education system. 1 Around a quarter of PBRF-eligible staff did not declare their ethnic group in the PBRF staff census.
