These indicators will look at support for and development of new researchers, with a particular focus on Māori and Pasifika researchers. The main pathway for new researchers is through completion of a PhD.

1.  Key indicators

There has been steady growth in doctoral enrolments and completions.

Enrolments and completions of doctoral degrees by women have been steadily increasing, with women making more than 50 percent of doctoral students since 2004 and their completion numbers approaching those of men.

Enrolments and completions for Māori students have significantly increased since 1997. However, there has been less notable growth for Pasifika.

Five-year completion rates have remained fairly steady since 1997. The rates for women are slightly below those for all students and the rates for Maori are notably lower. However, women and Maori are more likely to still be enrolled and studying towards completion after five year than is the case for all students.
