The main pathway for new researchers is through completion of a PhD. 1. Key indicatorsThere has been steady growth in doctoral enrolments and completions. ![]() Index of doctoral degree completions and formal domestic doctoral students 1997–2005 Enrolments and completions of doctoral degrees by women have been steadily increasing, with women making more than 50 percent of doctoral students since 2004 and their completion numbers approaching those of men. ![]() Number of men and women enrolled in and completing doctoral degrees 1997–2005 Enrolments and completions for Māori students have significantly increased since 1997. However, there has been less notable growth for Pasifika. ![]() Number of Maori and Pasifika students enrolled in and completing doctoral degrees 1997–2005 Five-year completion rates have remained fairly steady since 1997. The rates for women are slightly below those for all students and the rates for Maori are notably lower.
