These indicators will look at Maori staff within tertiary education.

1.  Key indicators

Māori staff continue to be underrepresented in tertiary education, especially in comparison to the proportion of Māori students. The census provides a indicator of the proportion of teaching staff across tertiary education who are Maori. The 2003 PBRF provided information on staff engaged in research and teaching at degree level and above.

SourcePopulationProportion who are Māori
1996 CensusTertiary Teaching Professionals8.4%
2001 CensusTertiary Teaching Professionals8.6%
2003 PBRFStaff engaged in research and teaching at degree level and above6.1%

The analysis of 2005/07 and 2006/08 profiles shows that recruitment and support of Māori staff is only picked up in some TEO profiles.
