Key indicatorsThe total number of international students in formal tertiary education peaked in 2004 and declined in 2005. The decrease has been in students from Asia, offset by a small growth in students from Europe and North America. ![]() Formal international students by region of origin and as a percentage of all formal students in NZ 1999–2005 The Statistics New Zealand Survey of English Language Providers provides a lead indicator for international student supply. Changes in demand are often seen first in this sector. English-language student numbers peaked in 2003 and have declined substantially since then. 2005 saw a small increase in students from Europe, which was not sustained in 2006.
