These indicators look at the engagement of the tertiary education system with Māori, whānau, hapū and iwi and the contribution of the system to Māori and iwi development.

1.  Key indicators

The analysis of profiles found that most TEIs and ITOs had change-focussed objectives relating to Māori development in 2005/07. There was a similar pattern in 2006/08. ITOs were mostly focused on consultation and engagement as means of increasing Māori participation. TEIs had broadly expressed objectives around engagement, developing relationships and consultation.

In the research on stakeholder engagement, Māori stakeholders reported considerable engagement with providers. However, the quality of engagement was mixed. Māori stakeholders saw tertiary education making a strong and vital contribution to Māori acheivement of economic and social goals.
