This indicator set looks the affordability of tertiary education to government and to students.

1.  Key indicators

Government spent $2,721 million on tertiary education in 2004/05, down 0.9 percent on the previous year.

From 2000 to 2003, an increasing number of EFTS in TEIs were funded from sources other than formal students funded through the student component. The main sources being international students and non-formal students. Both of these sources have declined in EFTS from 2004 onwards.

The graph below shows the ratio of the average fee to a domestic student at a TEI to the average weekly wage over the period from 1997 to 2004. In effect, this ration calculates, for someone with average income, how many weeks of gross earnings it would take to cover the average fee charged by a TEI.

Average student loan borrows have remained steady since 2000. Average loan balances have grown, reflecting more people borrowing over a longer period of time.

This report applies statistical modelling to the Integrated Dataset of Student Loan Scheme Borrowers. It provides interesting new information on the likelihood of a borrower being declared overseas five years post study across a variety of characteristics such as size of student loan leaving balance and level of study.
