Monitoring the Tertiary Education Strategy - ENewsletter
This eNewsletter bringing you highlights and updates on the monitoring and evaluation of the Tertiary Education Strategy.

1.  Evaluation of TES underway

We are now underway with the evaluation of the Tertiary Education Strategy. The evaluation will be a staged project, providing timely information to regularly feed into the development of the next strategy. It will be conducted in three stages, covering:

  1. What do we need to know to formulate the next Tertiary Education Strategy?

  2. What do we need to know to implement the next Tertiary Education Strategy?

  3. What has been the overall effect of the current Tertiary Education Strategy?

Stage 1 is bringing together existing and easily accessible information, with a focus on the usefulness and useability of the existing strategy, and statements of tertiary education priorities, as strategy documents.

A significant part of Stage 1 will be a series of interviews with key people across the tertiary education sector. The Ministry has contracted Miles Shepheard of Synergia Ltd to undertake this research. The interviews will be taking place over the next six to eight weeks.

We will also make use of other information in this stage, including:

  • recently completed research on tertiary education providers’ engagement with stakeholders (due to be released in April)
  • an analysis of 2005/07 and 2006/08 TEO profiles
  • results of the monitoring of the TES.

The results of Stage 1 will be publicly available by July, to support and feed into the consultation on the next strategy. Preliminary results will also be provided to the team responsible for developing the next strategy.

Go to the Evaluation pages to find out more about the evaluation.

2.  New home for tertiary education research and analysis reports

The Education Counts website is the new home for tertiary education research and analysis reports. Since last August, a number of new reports have been released, covering:

  • paying off student loans
  • factors that make a difference to getting a degree
  • factors that determine the research performance of academic staff in NZ universities
  • differences in tertiary education study patterns between those who come to study from school, work and unemployment.

On the same website, you can also access the electronic statistical tables that accompany the most recent Profile and Trends report. These tables are considerably more extensive than the printed tables provided in previous years. They are available as Excel spreadsheets for downloading.

The address for Education Counts is http://educationcounts.edcentre.govt.nz. All the material referred to above can be found in the Publications area.
