The Purpose of the National Database of Maori Scholars

3.  Overview of the project

Developing a Māori doctoral database Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga has approached the Ministry of Education to support the development of a Māori doctoral database to address this information need. This database would bring together information on Māori students studying towards doctoral degrees and the research they are undertaking, as well as those who have completed their doctorates.

Why have a National Database of Māori Scholars? Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (The National Institute of Research Excellence for Māori Development and Advancement) has been steadily developing the Māori and Indigenous (MAI) Doctoral, Bridging, and Mentoring programme. Through the MAI programme, a clear need has been identified to improve the information available about Māori doctoral students and doctoral holders.

Why is this information useful? This information would provide a knowledge resource about research being undertaken through the doctoral process. This knowledge would be of value to tertiary providers, students, and iwi and hapū.

Who will this benefit and how? The Ministry of Education sees this as a valuable development for the tertiary education sector, government, and iwi. It will enable Māori doctoral candidates, students, and their supervisors to find out who else is undertaking, or completed, PhD research in similar areas. It will provide statistical information on enrolment, completion, and outcomes that can inform provider planning and government policy. It will also help iwi locate and support their own researchers, as well as finding out about research on matters of interest to them.

The Ministry of Education and Tertiary Education Commission’s role The Ministry of Education, with support from the Tertiary Education Commission, is working with Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga to advise on development of the database. There are a number of issues that will need to be considered including privacy, stewardship and custodianship, alignment with existing data collections, access, and reporting.
