A mentor database?

The database will include both scholars currently undertaking a PhD and those who have completed. So therefore will provide a means of connecting with other scholars with similar interests / experiences.

We will take up the suggestion of including within the database a field that indicates whether scholars are willing to act as mentors.

Protecting IP?

The purpose of the database is to connect people. There will be limited requirements to describe research interests and activities on the database and it will be very much up to individuals as to how much they information they add to the database.

As part of developing the database we will need to think about guidelines around this area.

Also, the database will not be owned or managed by government agencies. In the first instance, Nga Pae o te Maramatanga will be the owners/custodians. This will be reviewed once it is up and running - through discussion with universities, wānanga and iwi as to the best way to manage it.

The role of TEC and the Ministry is to provide support and advice on its establishment.

I would like to know how the privacy of current or proposed research activities is going to be maintained?

It has been my past experience that information sent to government bodies that is subject to review by peers, or dissemination to peers, is likely to get ripped off, and found to be the subject of research funding applications by those peers at a later date.

How are you going to protect against this type of theft of intellectual information?
