The education sector is large, diverse and fragmented. There are many opportunities to use ICT to solve common sector problems, as we move to a more networked, collaborative environment for learners and teachers. The ESAF exists to facilitate connections between sector networks:

  • networks of people seeking access to distributed information sources
  • networks of business and learning processes that cross organisation boundaries
  • networks of technology that allow disparate systems to inter-operate seamlessly

It defines specifications against which people can design and deliver sector solutions:

  • a building code — standards to make Interoperability possible, without defining sets of prescribed widgets
  • a resource atlas — services to navigate the Information Commons and allow organisations to expose their holdings
  • a security code — tools to manage my Digital Education Persona through access rights and restrictions

As a result, it will be easier for:

  • learners to engage in both learning and administrative processes
  • learning institutions to meet learners’ needs and fulfil their statutory obligations
  • learning content providers to make their holdings more accessible and more usable
  • central agencies to collaborate with each other and with other sector stakeholders

It will enable individualised learning paths through the teaching process.
