Metadata describes the data. For the Architectural Framework the availability of a metadata description is almost more important than the availability of the data, because it can describe such things as

  • Rules, eg
    • validation
      • syntactic
      • semantic
    • ownership
      • access
        • aggregated
        • individual
      • update
        • create
        • update
        • approval
        • delete
  • Relationships
  • Relevance
  • Accuracy
  • Status, eg archived, private, unverified

This metadata information can be accessed to ascertain proactively the availability of information.

The New Zealand Government Locator Service (NZGLS) provides a standard based on the Australian Government Locator Service which in turn is based on the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative.

The Federated Metadata Standards? project addresses this.
