A Digital Education Persona defines my personal access rights and restrictions while on-line. These are of 2 kinds:

  • compulsory — my formal interactions with the sector, covering all information related to me as a member of a learning institution

  • voluntary — my informal relationships with various virtual learning communities, which I may join and leave on an ad hoc basis

The first implies a top-down authentication framework. This controls my access to information and services, either as an individual (only I can see my record of learning) or as a member of a defined group (everyone enrolled in a course can access the course chat room). The information space is essentially private and controlled.

The second implies a bottom-up authentication framework. I decide where I go and what I do there. I might subscribe to an information service, join a community of practice, or just hang out with my on-line peers. I control my own on-line profile and take it wherever I go. The information space is open to anyone in the sector.

In either case, I expect to feel safe on-line. I expect my privacy will be respected and protected. I want to know whatever information is held about me, wherever it may be.

The digital me can communicate through any device, anywhere — on my computer at school, at work or at home, on my mobile phone, or on my PDA. It travels with me throughout my learning life.
