The Ministry of Education’s focus is on better learning for every New Zealander — raising achievement and reducing disparity. This spans all stages of learning, from a child’s first words to the adult becoming a lifelong learner. People who keep acquiring skills, knowledge and attitudes gain the best chance to get good jobs and to share in the wider life of their community, culture and society. ICT contributes to this goal through the idea of Networked Learners?. This covers both formal learning processes, such as enrollment in the compulsory sector, and informal processes, as volunteer members of virtual learning communities. The challenge is the sheer size and diversity of the education sector — different cultures, different ages and stages, different learning styles, different delivery mechanisms, different hardware, different software. One ICT size doesn’t fit all. Adopting an Education Sector Architectural Framework will make it easier for everyone — learners, education providers, government agencies and the community — to work collaboratively, form dynamic learning clusters and share information. It will accommodate a variety of information needs and support an increasingly diverse learning population, based on agreed and open standards that are independent of technology platforms. It will do this in a way that is trusted and secure. |
