The definition of an architecture used in ANSI/IEEE standard 1471–2000 is: “the fundamental organisation of a system, embodied in its components, their relationships to each other and the environment, and the principles governing its design and evolution”. More generally, the term “architecture” is used in 2 contexts:

  1. a formal description of a system, or a detailed plan of the system at a component level to guide its implementation

  2. the structure of components, their interrelationships, and the principles and guidelines governing their design and evolution over time

An “architectural framework” is a tool which can be used for developing a broad range of different architectures.

The starting point for any architecture is a statement of the business requirement which that architecture is designed to meet. The focus of this Architectural Framework is interoperability — providing services to, and exchanging information with, other parties.

The e-government component architecture outlines how the various components of the evolving e-government architecture fit together, and how - in whole or in part - they can be used by government agencies to build their own business-focused systems.
