The future direction for the wiki site needs to be considered in terms of wider Ministry and sector developments.

The Ministry is currently developing a new web infrastructure - which is likely to include some form of collaboration tool. Tenders for the development will be issued around April 2004 - with full implementation of the new environment likely to be completed early 2005.

Within the web infrastructure project a number of issues will need to addressed, such as:

  • Ministry / sector look and feel (being handled by Stakeholder Relationships Unit)
  • Metadata management - use of federated metadata
  • Business process management, including document management and version control
  • implementation of role based security

The ESAF project is also driving forward the idea of a sector web architecture, which would address issues such as role based security throughout the sector.

The use of Sharepoint Portal is also being evaluated by TISSL to support collaborative projects.

Implications for wiki

The main implication for wiki is that within 12 months there is likely to be a Ministry mandated collaborative web tool available.

Therefore, we should think in terms of the wiki as it currently exists having a further 12 month life span to support existing projects and any new Ministry projects that have urgent requirements for collaboration via web.

Any changes to the wiki site should be limited to those needed to meet thekey business requirements of the projects.

We should consider the next stages as moving wiki from prototype to demonstration and use it as an opportunity to further develop the business requirements understanding for the Ministry’s choices of collaborative tools.

The business requirements of the wiki projects will need to feed into the Ministry’s web infrastructure project to ensure that the Ministry tool at least meets the current functionality provided by wiki.

In early 2005 there will need to be a migration process to the new arrangements. Depending on decisions made in the Ministry web infrastructure project and on developments within PmWiki, the migration could be any of the following:

  • PmWiki to new Ministry tool (which could be another wiki or something entirely different)
  • PmWiki to new sector wide tool
  • PmWiki upgraded to meet Ministry and ESAF standards
  • PmWiki continues as seperate resource for existing projects and meets standards where possible and cost effective
