The site automatically supports smart quotes. It turns any quote marks into left or right quotes, according to the context. As in: “‘Smart quotes’ are cool,” he said. Sometimes, the default behaviour is not what you want: for example, ’90s needs a right quote. You can achieve this with a backtick mark, the ` character. A quote mark following a number becomes a prime mark, as in 6’ and 6”. Again, an author can over-ride this with a backtick.

It also turns -- into — (an em dash), a numeric range 1-5 into 1–5 (an en dash), and turns -> and <- into → and ←. Authors can force an en dash with a backtick followed by a hyphen, for example Wellington – Picton. Finally, +- (plus minus) becomes ±.

Authors can enter left and right quote entities directly, if preferred. For readability, the following table displays the quotes against the letter O.
